The Ukrainian Armed Forces have received and are deploying Slinger remotely controlled counter-uncrewed aircraft system modules developed by Australian manufacturer Electro Optic Systems, according to photographs published by photographer Louis Souvestre.
The modules have been installed on pickup trucks in Ukraine, forming mobile fire teams intended to engage hostile drones. The reported fielding follows earlier plans for Electro Optic Systems to supply 160 Slingers to Ukraine.
30 mm cannon with radar-guided targeting
Slinger is built around the 30 mm Bushmaster M230LF automatic cannon. The remotely controlled module also incorporates radar and an optoelectronic targeting system for detecting and tracking aerial threats.
According to the report, the system can detect and engage kamikaze drones and reconnaissance UAVs at ranges beyond 800 metres when using specialised 30 mm ammunition with radio fuzes. The module weighs about 355 kg, allowing it to be integrated on a range of vehicle platforms.
Earlier delivery plans
In 2023, Electro Optic Systems was reported to be planning the delivery of 160 Slinger modules for Ukraine. Of that total, 110 systems were intended for integration on M113 vehicles, while Ukrainian company Praktika had ordered a further 50 modules.
The company had prepared an initial shipment in October, with a batch of 10 systems expected to reach Ukraine by the end of that year. Beyond pickup trucks, the modules can also be fitted to light armoured vehicles and armoured personnel carriers to provide drone protection for frontline units, according to the report.
