Reports of multiple explosions emerged near the port city of Kaspiysk in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan on the morning of September 19, amid what Russian authorities described as a large Ukrainian drone attack across several regions of the country.
The OSINT project Exilenova+ reported the explosions near the local port. Footage released by Militarnyi appeared to show an unmanned aerial vehicle flying over Kaspiysk. However, the available material did not establish the drone’s operator, intended destination or whether it reached a target.
Russian claim of wider drone attack
Russia’s Ministry of Defense said air-defense forces had downed 344 Ukrainian drones during the night of September 19 over 16 Russian regions. The Republic of Dagestan was among the regions where the ministry said air-defense activity had taken place.
The ministry’s account did not identify a specific target in or near Kaspiysk, nor did it establish whether any drone had penetrated defenses or struck a facility there. Its claimed interception total and attribution of the drones to Ukraine had not been independently verified in the reporting available at publication.
The reported drone threat also affected civil aviation in Dagestan. Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsya, temporarily restricted air traffic at Makhachkala Uytash Airport, located near Kaspiysk. The restrictions were introduced during the morning and were later lifted, allowing airport operations to resume.
No confirmed damage or identified target
As of publication, it remained unknown which facility may have been the intended objective of the reported attack, if any, and whether any strike had reached its mark. Russian authorities had not reported damage to either port infrastructure or military facilities in Kaspiysk.
Kaspiysk is the location of the Russian Navy’s principal Caspian Flotilla base. According to Militarnyi, the base includes ships capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles. The outlet also reported that flotilla facilities in Kaspiysk had been targeted in previous Ukrainian strikes, although the September 19 reports did not connect the explosions or the drone seen over the city to a specific naval, military or port installation.
Earlier port incident in Dagestan
The reports from Kaspiysk followed a separate drone incident at the Makhachkala International Sea Trade Port on September 10. Militarnyi described that event as the first Ukrainian drone attack on the port, which is approximately 15 km from Kaspiysk.
Russian authorities confirmed a fire at the Makhachkala port’s infrastructure after the September 10 incident, according to the outlet. The confirmation of that earlier fire does not establish damage from the September 19 reports near Kaspiysk, for which no comparable official damage report had been issued at the time of publication.
